2018-2019 Mirjam Varadinis


is an art historian and has been a curator at Kunsthaus Zürich since September 2002. There she is in charge for contemporary art and has organized various exhibitions, including among others, the group shows “Action!” (2016) and “Shifting Identities” (2008) as well as solo exhibitions with Akram Zaatari, Javier Téllez, Haris Epaminonda, Rosa Barba, Roman Ondák, Adrian Paci, Mircea Cantor, Tino Sehgal, Erik van Lieshout, Nedko Solakov, Urs Fischer and David Shrigley a.o. She has published numerous catalogues and artist books and contributes to international art magazines.
Mirjam Varadinis is one of the curators of Manifesta12 in Palermo this year. In 2013, she curated “0 Performance – The Fragile Beauty of Crisis”, a special project for the 5th Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art. In 2012, she co-curated “TRACK” (together with Philippe Van Cauteren), a large-scale, city-wide international group exhibition in the tradition of “Chambres d’amis” in Ghent, Belgium. In 2006, Mirjam Varadinis was also a curator of “Printemps de Septembre”, an annual festival of contemporary arts in Toulouse, France.

2017 - 2018     Simon Lamunière

After his studies at the School of Visual Arts in Geneva (today HEAD) and a postgraduate course at the Schule für Gestaltung in Basel, Simon Lamunière has received grants for a residence at the Cité internationale des Arts, Paris and at the Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart where he produces some multimedia pieces. His experience as curator began at the Centre pour l'image contemporaine (CIC) with the International Video Week program, one of the first video festivals in Switzerland and Europe. He then created and managed "Version 1.0", the first edition of what became the "Version Biennale". After leaving the Centre in 2004, Lamunière designed and curated the website of the documenta X directed by Catherine David, in Kassel in 1997 and contributed to the creation of the Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM) website in Luxembourg with Claude Closky, Jean-Charles Massera and Benjamin Weil. As an artist he has participated to solo and group shows from 1987 to 2003 in Paris, New-York, Lisbonne, Frankfuft and in Switzerland. His last known exhibition was at the Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain or MAMCO, Geneva, in 2003. In 2000 Simon Lamunière was appointed curator of Art|Unlimited at Art Basel, a job he held until 2011. He has been the project manager of Neons within the City Contemporary Art Fund (FMAC) and the Canton Contemporary Art Fund (FCAC) of Geneva. Located on the largest public place of Geneva, this site-specific art project invited Swiss and international artists to create luminous artworks for building roofs in the same way as advertising signs are placed on the Geneva lakeside.

2015 - 2016     Daniel Kurjaković

In May 2017, Daniel Kurjaković will join the Kunstmuseum Basel’s team in the newly created position of “curator of programs.» An art historian and curator by training, Kurjaković has worked in the art field in various capacities for over twenty years. He was born in Olten, Switzerland, in 1970 and currently lives in Paris. He studied art history, Slavic languages, and philosophy at the University of Zurich. Thanks to a career that took him to a variety of institutions around the world, Daniel Kurjaković has a wide network of contacts in Europe, Asia, and the United States as well as extensive experience in cooperating with institutions and a global perspective, key qualifications for his new position.
Kurjaković was curator at Kunstmuseum Luzern, Kunsthof Zürich, CNEAI (Paris), and the Burger Collection (Hong Kong). He also implemented curatorial projects for the New Museum (New York), Fanar Projects (Beirut), Helmhaus Zürich, the Fondation d’entreprise Ricard (Paris), Kunsthalle Zürich, and other institutions. In addition to exhibitions of the work of contemporary artists including Georges Adéagbo, Marie José Burki, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Vittorio Santoro, Annie Lai-kuen Wan, and Lawrence Weiner, he realized inter-institutional research platforms, symposia, performance art and film festivals, and experimental art projects. He founded the journal Torrent. Source Material by Artists and the publishing venture Memory/Cage Editions, which has brought renowned artists and emerging talents together for publication projects. His essays and art-critical writings have appeared in catalogues produced by Kunsthalle Basel, Kunsthall Malmö, Aargauer Kunsthaus, MAMCO Geneva, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Basel, and other institutions. He has been a regular contributor to various art journals around the world and held several teaching positions, including at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (Paris), the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (Lyon), the Academy of Visual Arts/Baptist University (Hong Kong), the Rijksacademie (Amsterdam), and the Zurich University of the Arts.

2013 - 2014     Jacqueline Burckhardt

An exhibition curator, she was joint founder of the art journal Parkett (Zurich/New York), where she has worked as editor since 1983. She chaired the Federal Commission for Fine Arts from 1998 to 2006 and has since been consultant for the Novartis Campus in Basle, curating site-specific art projects. She has been director of the Sommerakademie at Zentrum Paul Klee in Berne since 1998.

2011-2012     Pascal Beausse

An art critic and a curator, Pascal Beausse is head of the photograph collections at the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP), Paris. He is also guest lecturer at the Head (University of Art and Design), Geneva. He has been a correspondent in Paris for Flash art since 1998, is a member of the editorial board of Critique d’art, and has collaborated with many journals including Arts Press, Beaux Arts Magazine, Blocnotes and Omnibus. He has written several essays, monographs and articles, and interviewed numerous artists. Among others, he has curated the following exhibitions: La cabane, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2006; Same, Same but Different, Veletrzni Palàc, Prague, 2006; Welcome to Heterotopia!!, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, Seidayama, 2006; The Clearing, International Triennial of Contemporary Art, Prague, 2008; Nulle part est un endroit, Centre photographique d’Ile de France, Pontault-Combault, 2010; nùmero tres – de la casa a la fàbrica, La Virreina – Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona, 2012.

2009-2010     Emmanuel Latreille

After heading the Fonds régional d’art contemporain (Frac) in Auvergne (1990-1995), and then in Burgundy (1996-2002), Emmanuel Latreille is now the director of the Frac in Languedoc-Roussillon. In this capacity, he has brought numerous artists to the public’s attention and organised major thematic exhibitions, such as: Poussière (dust memories), 1998; Bricolage?, 2000; Chauffe, Marcel!, 2006; La dégelée Rabelais, 2008; and Casanova Forever, 2010. He has written monographs and analytical essays on contemporary art, while his activity as a critic is focused on questioning the language that accompanies art work. Through the acquisitions of the three institutions he has directed, Emmanuel Latreille has made an important contribution to the growth and enhancement of public collections. He is also president of the Fédération des professionnels de l’art contemporain (Cipac), which brings together professional associations involved in contemporary art in France.

 

2007-2008 Eric Corne

Artist, curator, and founder of the Contemporary Art Centre, Le Plateau, Paris. Since 2004, Eric Corne has been involved in projects in the Balkans and Poland. He has often worked as a curator at the Berardo Museum (Lisbon) since it opened in 2007. In 2009, he curated an exhibition at IVAM, Valencia. Passionately fond of Brazil, he is currently working on the construction of an art centre and a residencies programme in Cidade Tiradentes, a suburb of São Paulo. He is also curating an exhibition entitled “Un siècle d’art en France, 1865-1965: des réalismes de Courbet à la figuration narrative”, at MAASP, São Paulo. Eric Corne has contributed to numerous catalogues in France and abroad. As a painter, he is represented by the Patricia Dorfmann Gallery, Paris, and the Bernard Ceysson Gallery, Luxembourg.
